53 rue Erlanger, 75016 Paris
The Bilingual Montessori School of Paris Auteuil was created in 1985, it is one of the campuses of The Bilingual Montessori Schools of Paris, and includes 2 classes:
- 2-3 years (Toddlers)
- 3-6 years (Children’s House)
We are a Montessori school that is AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) and AMF (Association Montessori de France) approved. We are also approved by PMI (Maternal and Child Protection) of the city of Paris.
Our establishment is 100% bilingual, in each class we have 2 full time Montessori teachers: one English speaking teacher (whose mother tongue is English) with a Montessori AMI diploma, and one French speaking teacher with a Montessori AMI diploma. In the « Children’s house » class, there is an additional Montessori assistant.
A linguistic and cultural immersion
The children work all day long with the Montessori materials; the teachers guide them in English or in French, and vice-versa. The two languages happen naturally, either through our team or through their interactions with the other children; this year we have 20 different nationalities between the 2 classes.
In our schools, English is used daily with the English-speaking teacher who focuses on the development of their oral skills (both speaking and comprehension) by using fun activities. The children learn the basics of spoken language by relating the words they hear to the work they do with their teachers or in small groups. The language we use is the language of everyday life; children are perfectly capable of recognizing and absorbing its sounds, allowing them to repeat the words with a perfect accent, as if they were humming a familiar tune.
A caring, and professional team, in place for several years:
Our 2-3 yrs teachers, with AMI diplomas, have worked in this environment for several years, with more than 20 years for the French speaking teacher.
The 3-6 yrs class includes one French speaking teacher that has an AMI diploma, an English-speaking teacher with an AMI diploma (in place for 17 years), and a Montessori AMI assistant.
Our school is open 4 days a week, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We use the National Education school calendar.
The Toddler program
(2 to 3 years old)
« Learning to learn, and learning together »
We welcome children aged 2 to 3 years old from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. We introduce the first few days gently to allow the children to adapt at their own rhythm.
In the Montessori pedagogy, the separation and maturity must be carefully considered.
The child is welcomed every morning by a French speaking teacher and an English-speaking teacher. Socialization, language development, vocabulary enrichment in both languages, sharing and absorbing activities in this harmonious environment are the beginning of a perfect introduction to learning. Children of multiple nationalities (20 nationalities this year) learn together in French and English. In parallel with Montessori learning, we prepare daily art projects, as well as small and large motor coordination activities.
The language area is essential because we are witnessing a real «language explosion» at this age: the child needs language to communicate his needs, to explain himself, to become independent, to learn, to express his thoughts, ideas… The teachers will try to communicate with him using precise terms, to propose vocabulary enrichment activities, to read books to him every day… and this in French and in English.
This prepares the children for our 3 to 6 yr old program, where they will be welcomed in a similar bilingual environment.
Children’s House
(3 to 6 years old)
Children from 3 to 6 yrs old are welcomed by a French Montessori AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) trained teacher and one English speaking AMI trained teacher. The children stay all day and have lunch together at the school. A nap time is provided after lunch for the first year 3 year olds.
All 3 ages in the same class
The Montessori pedagogy is based on an open classroom for the children from 3 to 6 years of age arranged to allow them to work and learn together. This atmosphere encourages cooperation rather than competition in both languages. There is a high level of interaction between children, with younger children identifying with the older ones, and older children enjoying helping the younger ones to complete their activities on their own. This program has four core disciplines:
- Practical life (taking care of oneself and one’s environment)
- Sensory development (activities developing the five senses)
- Language (reading, writing)
- Math (decimal system, large numbers, association quantity symbols, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division…)
We use Montessori materials made in the Netherlands and approved by AMI(Association Montessori Internationale). At the level of mathematics, quantities are symbolized by glass beads (one bead=one unit, a bar of 10 beads=a dozen, a cube of a thousand beads=a thousand); weight is an essential element in the sensory perception of quantities, hence the need to have them made of glass and not of plastic.
As for the language material, the mobile alphabet, the rough sandpaper letters, cursive in French and script in English, allow a concrete learning of writing and reading.
The children also work on geography, biology and botany. Art is an integral part of the learning program.
Every Monday morning, we offer the « Music and the Brain » program. This program, close to the Montessori Pedagogy, mainly uses the body in learning rhythm and music. It is led by our Montessori educator and musician. The children play with various instruments (claves, maracas, triangles, drums and tambourines, xylophone) and we also offer an approach with a ukulele and a half-guitar for the older children. Every day, during the morning grouping, accompanied by the guitar, the children sing in English and French.
Once a week, the children participate in a “baking” workshop.
